About Ramon, Isabela

Ramon, Isabela, is a dynamic first-class municipality located in the southwestern portion of Isabela province. Functioning as a vital gateway between the Cagayan Valley and the Cordillera Administrative Region, it is an essential hub for the nation's food and energy security.

Historical Origins, The municipality was formally established on June 18, 1961, through Republic Act No. 3320. It was created by consolidating nine barrios—six from the municipality of Santiago (Bugallon, Burgos, San Miguel, San Sebastian, Raniag, and Pagrang-ayan) and three from San Mateo (Oscariz, Nagbacalan, and Bantug Petinez). The town was named in honor of Ramon Magsaysay, the 7th President of the Philippines, known for his dedication to the common people.

The Magat Dam: A National Landmark
  • Ramon is most famous for hosting the Magat Dam, one of the largest multipurpose dams in Southeast Asia.
  • Power Generation: The hydroelectric plant provides a massive 540 MW of clean energy to the Luzon grid.
  • Irrigation: It serves as the heart of the Magat River Integrated Irrigation System (MARIIS), supplying water to approximately 85,000 hectares of farmland, ensuring the province remains the "Rice Granary of the Philippines."
  • Fisheries: The dam's reservoir has enabled Ramon to become the "Tilapia Capital of Isabela," producing high-quality freshwater fish for northern Luzon.

Local Governance & Economy
As of 2024/2025 census data, Ramon has grown to a population of approximately 57,412 residents across 19 barangays. It is currently led by Mayor Giovanni Vizcarra. While it maintains its peaceful, rural charm, it has evolved into a 1st-class municipality, acting as a strategic "satellite town" to the nearby commercial center of Santiago City.
